In November of 2007, Make Films Not War founder Iara Lee sat down to speak with Iran's first Nobel Peace Laureate, Shirin Ebadi, at the offices of her legal practice in Tehran. Ebadi is an activist for refugee rights, as well as those of women and children. She was the first female Judge in Iran's history, before being forcibly retired after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. She is the founder and leader of the Association for Support of Children's Rights in Iran, and has written a number of books and articles focused on human rights. Make Films Not War, along with likeminded collaborators around the globe, is producing an international traveling film festival to showcase the very best of narrative and documentary films from around the world that promote peace with justice and oppose war and those who wage them. As conceived by the War Resisters League, the oldest pacifist organization in the United States, ScreenPeace will unite peace-loving filmmakers and filmgoers from Beirut to Washington, New Delhi to Pyongyang, in the belief that only through dialogue and a commitment to nonviolence we can develop solutions to the political, economic, and social problems of our increasingly shrinking planet.

The 5th Annual Kurdish Film Festival

The Fifth Kurdish Film Festival will take place in Berlin this year, April 17 - 23, 2008. Since its launch in 2002 it has become the largest Kurdish Film Festival in the world, and an important meeting place for Kurdish filmmakers. It draws its audience from amongst the Diaspora (approximately 50,000 Kurds from Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria live in Berlin) as well as those curious to better understand the art, culture and society of the Kurdish people, be they from Iran, Iraq, Turkey, or Syria. Not Accepting Submissions. Given the heightened risk of a preemptive, illegal U.S. attack against Iran, we have decided to temporarily suspend the open-submissions process for the CONFLICT ZONE FILM FUND. In the short term we are redirecting our resources towards supporting media in Iran and in the U.S. that can help prevent a looming conflict between the two countries, and that will encourage dialogue and diplomacy as the only responsible tools for conflict resolution. We greatly appreciate your interest, and encourage you to check back in a few months as to the status of the submissions process.
